The auxiliary is made up of 62 of the most caring adults, each one equally committed to assisting each patient, staff member, and visitor at Siloam Springs Memorial Hospital. These volunteers make a tremendous impact with their cheerful faces and servant hearts. The hosptial is truly grateful to have their generous donations of time. The auxiliary is pleased to have the Past President of the Arkansas Hospital Auxiliary Association as the current treasurer, Ann Cloud. The auxiliary is a 5-Star Auxiliary which is the highest degree possible based on state rating. As an auxiliary, more than 12,000 hours are donated yearly. In addition, the auxiliary is a generous donor to scholarship programs through proceeds from fundraisers and the Gift Shoppe.
There are a variety of volunteer areas throughout the hospital including:
Ambulatory Surgery Center: Volunteers man an information desk in the Surgery/ICU Waiting Rooms acting as the communication liaison between the patient family and the medical professionals caring for their family member. They provide information as to the status of the patient, direct family members to the cafeteria, and guide them to the clinical area where they can see their patient. The waiting room is manned from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m., or until the ambulatory surgeries and procedures end for the day. Fresh juice and coffee are provided daily.
Cardiac Rehabilitation: Volunteers aid the director and staff with individualized rehabilitation programs, including documentation and general clerical duties. Volunteer hours vary with the departments needs.
Emergency Room: Volunteers perform non-clinical, clerical jobs, run errands, manage the break room, and in times of crisis, provide comfort and reassurance to both accident victims and families. Volunteer hours are flexible as to time of day, but generally last four hours.
The Gift Shoppe: Volunteers man the retail gift store within the hospital. Duties include recording sales, cleaning the fixtures, and restocking. Gift Shoppe hours are 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., daily, with evening hours optional. Volunteer shifts run 9 a.m. – Noon; Noon – 4 p.m., with some flexibility on weekends.
Information Desk: The volunteer information desk is literally the first thing anyone entering the hospital sees. For that reason, those volunteers are responsible for greeting each person and offering any assistance available, whether patient room information or directions. Volunteers man the desk Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., with some flexibility on weekends. Volunteers must have a cheerful personality, positive phone skills, and attention to detail as they are privy to the admissions and dismissals of patients. They are also responsible for directing visitors to their destinations and for pursuing information on behalf of that visitor.
Patient Duty: Volunteers work the three halls of the Medical/Surgery floor known as 3North. Volunteer duties include delivering gratis newspapers, mail, floral deliveries, and guiding visitors to patient rooms. They provide fresh ice water, juice, and if permitted, snacks to the patients. They may be asked to read to a patient or provide a comforting presence for a patient in order for a family member to step out of the room. Volunteers deliver and pick up meal trays, always offering to assist with opening containers, but never actually feeding a patient. Volunteers are also encouraged to make themselves available to run errands or make deliveries on behalf of the staff in that area. Volunteers work 9 a.m. – Noon; Noon – 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Sewing, Arts, & Crafts [S.A.C.]: Volunteers cut out, sew, and stuff the rice bags for our OB Unit; stuffed animals which are given out throughout the hospital to patients and visitors; and sew blankets for newborns. During the month of November, SAC volunteers will sew “stockings” in which December newborns are sent home from the hospital. These hours are most flexible with the work done in the individual’s home.
W.H.A.L.E. [We Had A Little Emergency]: a state project adopted by The Arkansas Hospital Auxiliary Association in which packets are assembled to be distributed to all delivering parents which contain stickers to be attached to the infant car seat with emergency contact information to aid emergency personnel in the event that the driver of the vehicle is unable to communicate at that time. These packets are also given out through Emergency Services and local churches.
There are many other special events and fundraising events for volunteers. If you are interested in more information, please stop by the Auxiliary Information Desk, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. An auxilian will be on duty and can provide you with an application for membership and will give your contact information to the current Membership Chairman.
